Why Does Skype Act So Funny?

Greetings GOAL Team,

I've fielded a TON of questions and complaints regarding Skype. The main ones are:

1. Why does Skype sometime put chats on my phone, even when I'm on my PC?
2. Why do I have multiple conversation threads?
3. Why can't Skype "ring me" at every device?
4. Why can't I just continue a conversation from my history?

To answer these and understand Skype better, it's important to know that Skype is SECURED instant messaging. What does that mean?

Secured instant messaging (IM) is simply IM that is protected by our centralized controls. It's subject to recovery and contains all the protections that both your email and OneDrive have. To make IM secured fully, there can only be ONE connection to the IM server at one time. This is why Skype is considered "inconvenient". Skype will do it's best to assume where you are. Many times, it gets this wrong. In a nutshell, because secured IM only allows one connection at a time, your computer will vacate its connection and move to your phone or other device and vice versa. This generates the multiple conversations in your history, and prevents you from just continuing from where you left off. This is also why you will never see both your phone and computer (or other device) receive a message at the same time.

Google Hangouts, by comparison, is not secure in this respect. Therefore, you can have multiple threads and conversations on multiple devices at one time. Your Tech Team does its best to balance security and convenience, but we will always choose security first.

I hope this helps clear up some confusion. Please reach out to the Tech Team if you have further questions.
